DIGITAL BRICKS 2027 TRAINING CURRICULUM

This training curriculum is designed to provide a structured, practical path for training new concrete installers in the fundamentals of stamped concrete. It emphasizes the "stamping window"—the most critical technical skill—while balancing site preparation, tool management, and quality control.

Phase 1: Foundations & Preparation

Focus: Understanding the materials and ensuring a structurally sound base.

  • 1.1 Material Science: Study of cement types, aggregate ratios, and water-cement ratios. Understanding how admixtures (plasticizers/retarders) impact workability and set times.

  • 1.2 Site & Subgrade: Instruction on proper excavation, base material compaction (using plate compactors), and formwork installation.

  • 1.3 Tool Mastery: Identifying the "essential kit": bull floats, darbies, tampers (for imprint depth), texture mats, flex mats, and hand rollers for edges.

  • 1.4 Safety & Hazard Management: PPE requirements, handling chemical release agents, and maintaining a clean, safe job site.

Focus: Managing the transition from fluid concrete to the perfect impression.

  • 2.1 Concrete Placement: Proper pouring, screeding techniques (ensuring level slabs), and early surface finishing to bring the "paste" to the surface.

  • 2.2 The Timing Principle: Teaching trainees to identify the precise moment of "plasticity"—when the concrete is firm enough to support weight but soft enough to take a deep, sharp impression.

  • 2.3 Coloring Systems: Application techniques for integral color (batch-mixed), color hardeners (broadcast), and release agents (powder vs. liquid) to ensure uniform coverage.

Phase 2: The Pour & The "Stamping Window"

Phase 3: Stamping Execution

Focus: Precision, technique, and professional finish.

  • 3.1 Mat Alignment: Strategies for laying mats in a continuous pattern without "ghosting" (mismatched grout lines) or double impressions.

  • 3.2 Pressure & Texture: Consistent use of tampers to achieve uniform depth. Learning to use flex mats and skin textures for edges, corners, and tight areas.

  • 3.3 Crew Roles: Defining the workflow:

    • The Finisher: Manages the surface level

    • The Stamper: Ensures alignment and depth.

    • The Runner: Handles mat transitions and detail work.

Phase 4: Post-Stamping & Maintenance

Focus: Sealing the work and managing expectations.

  • 4.1 Finishing Touches: Techniques for curing and joint sawing/tooling to prevent uncontrolled cracking.

  • 4.2 Sealer Application: Choosing and applying appropriate sealers (high-gloss, matte, or non-slip) to protect against UV and chemical damage.

  • 4.3 Quality Control & Repair: How to identify and fix common defects (shallow textures, color inconsistencies) before the concrete fully cures.
